Emilio Tamez (b. 1999) is an American-born photographer whose work examines the interplay between sanctity, transgression, and the body as a site of emotional, psychological, and spiritual inscription. Through a technically rigorous practice, Tamez constructs a visual language that draws equally from autobiography, esoteric symbolism, and contemporary social observation.
Her work investigates body language as an ultimate form of truth-telling, seeking to articulate inner states through precise manipulations of light, color, and texture as they interact with the human form. Lust, lamentation, prayer, meditations on femininity, anguish, romance, and rebellion- among others, are recurring egregores in her work. These concepts themselves become characters, possessing her subjects and reappearing throughout her world of imagery. Pursuing a personalized lexicon of signs and symbols, Tamez’s photographs propose a reimagined future while reflecting critically on the present moment.
